My Bid for President

Because None of This Is Normal

Stay engaged, speak out, change is possible

I don’t know how else to say it: these are deeply troubling times.

We’re seeing actions that raise serious concerns—calls to jail political opponents, the detention of students who have not been charged with crimes but expressed dissenting views on policies in Gaza, and the use of the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to remove immigrants without what many argue is sufficient due process. There are also concerns about foreign policy positions, the removal of career officials in favor of political loyalists, the firing of inspectors general, and pressure placed on prosecutors and law firms connected to perceived adversaries.

Add to that the pardoning of individuals involved in the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack, sweeping changes across government agencies, and a political climate where many Republican lawmakers remain silent while Democrats appear divided. Decisions like advancing a continuing budget resolution have raised fears that even more institutional changes could follow.

For many people, it feels overwhelming. Frustration, exhaustion, even despair—those reactions are understandable.

But this may not be the full story.

It’s possible that, in time, this period will be seen not only for its damage, but for what it sparked. Even before all of this, our system faced serious challenges—growing inequality, the outsized influence of money in politics, and a sense among many that the system was not working for them.

Moments like this can become turning points.

Across the country, people are speaking out and getting involved in ways both large and small. From attending town halls and contacting elected officials, to organizing locally and supporting vulnerable communities, there is a growing level of civic engagement. Grassroots movements are gaining traction, and political energy is building in visible ways.

Public opinion is shifting, and more people are paying attention, asking questions, and demanding accountability. Leaders across the political spectrum are drawing large crowds, and conversations that once stayed on the sidelines are now front and center.

These are difficult times—among the most challenging in recent memory. History has seen similar moments of tension and division. But history also shows that periods of strain can lead to renewal.

As long as people stay engaged, continue to speak out, and work toward something better, change remains possible.

The outcome isn’t written yet.
